Youth Environmental Awareness: Shaping the Future Through Responsibility in Chernivtsi

On April 24, 2026, in Chernivtsi, as part of European Youth Week 2026, which officially began that day in the European Union, a lecture event was held on the topic “Youth Environmental Culture: Responsibility Shaping the Future”.

The event was organized jointly by the Department of Social Policy of the Chernivtsi City Council, the Division for Family and Youth Affairs of the Department of Social Policy of the Chernivtsi City Council, and the NGO “YOUTH. SCIENCE. SPORTS. HEALTHY MOVEMENT OF UKRAINE”.

It is symbolic that the meeting took place at the “Dome of Unity” – a space that brings together people, ideas, and initiatives for a shared future. It was here that young people (including IDPs) had the opportunity to discuss the importance of environmental awareness, a responsible attitude toward the environment, and the role of each individual in shaping sustainable development.

The event began with a presentation by the head of the NGO “YOUTH. SCIENCE. SPORTS. HEALTHY MOVEMENT OF UKRAINE”, PhD in Physical Education and Sports, Associate Professor Iaroslav Galan, who spoke about the essence of environmental culture, its significance for modern society, and the younger generation. Particular attention was paid to sustainable development as the foundation of the future, the key components of environmental culture, and the role of youth in fostering a responsible attitude toward nature.

Participants also learned about initiatives and events already implemented in collaboration with partners, aimed at promoting environmental culture, active citizenship, and European values among children and youth.

A particularly engaging part of the meeting was an interactive session led by the organization’s administrative staff member Liliana Hutsilyak. Using their smartphones, participants joined in online activities. This format made the event even more modern, dynamic, and engaging for young people.

Participants actively answered questions, demonstrating their knowledge and interest in the topic. The most active participants received commemorative medals and souvenir items.

The event was organized as part of a project by the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Carpathian Fund – Hungary, and the Carpathian Fund – Ukraine.

Today, fostering an environmental culture among young people is extremely important, as it is the younger generation that shapes the future – a conscious, responsible, and sustainable one.

Thank you to all participants and partners for your cooperation and active involvement!
