NUDGING2MOVE

The NGO YOUTH. SCIENCE. SPORT. HEALTHY MOVEMENT OF UKRAINE together with partners is implementing the European Union project ERASMUS-SPORT entitled “Promoting active mobility and living for healthier and sustainable cities through nudging / NUDGING2MOVE.”

Nudging4Move address the ERASMUS+ sports objective of ‘Encouraging the participation in sport and physical activity’ by developing a number of tools based on ‘nudges’ concept to encourage active mobility and active living in cities. According to Nobel prize winner Richard Thaler, a nudge is “any aspect of the choice architecture that alters people’s behaviour in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic incentives”. The nudge theory suggests that behaviour can be influenced by small, cheap suggestions and positive reinforcements. Nudging4Move adapts the principle that walking and cycling for transport are well suited to bring more physical activity into everyday life considering that a mobile person in Europe spends between 70 to 80 min per day travelling and that 50% of all car trips are shorter than 5 km, as reported by Herry et al. (2011); Follmer et al. (2010); Transport (2015)). The project will involve 5 pilot sites ( Thessaloniki/Greece, Palermo/Italy, Sakarya/Turkey, Alpiarça/Porgugal, Chernivtsi/Ukraine) in every country that will target a total around 1400 participants.

The main objectives are: • To analyse the active mobility behaviour of the community at the ground level • To design nudge-based interventions for active mobility uptake (Intervention Design) • To implement the interventions and measure the results • To support the implementation and further outreach of Active Cities by ‘effective’ use of communication and emotional connect The main outputs will include a report on behaviour analysis, development of ‘nudges portfolio’, Lessons Learnt/policy recommendations report and a stakeholder mapping & analysis report (Active Mobility Discovery Process).
